Sitting at the Hudson river, watching all the lights of Jersey City, on my right hand the yellow and white lights of George-Washington-Bridge, an incredible numbers of planes approaching and departing Newark, , behind me lots of people promenading and enjoying a wonderful mild and exceptionnel non-humid night. Wow. The new Firefox is really worth downloading. No matter whether Safari might be faster, the set of great add-on's makes it absolutely unique.
This Blogpost is written and edited in scribefire, and only this amazing little piece of software makes it a hard choice to stay with Safari (but I believe it's available for the Mac-Browser, too).

Anyway, I'm going to stick with Firefox for a while.

NY Video 2.0: My impressions

First of all: It was my third time participating this Meetup, and again I was impressed by how many people attended. Yaron is a perfect host, thanks a lot for organizing this.

Regarding the presentations. My expectations are a little different from what I saw today. I stopped watching TV (following a song of RHCP: Throw away your television) years ago for three reasons:

I was bored by the programme
I was even more bored by the advertising
I felt a was a perfect waste of time

And I believe that's true for many others, too.

The Internet, and especially web2.0, the read/write web, seems to be different and I find it worth spending time there, because you can participate. So I wonder why lots of the Start Ups have tv in their name and focus a lot on transferring the old (advertising) and new (HD) TV world to the web. Even if I found the advertising approach of Adotube funny at the first moment, I'm sure that I would get bored and annoyed when I had to watch strange comic-like ads laying OVER the movie I'm about to enjoy. Could not imagine anybody being happy with it.

I liked the high quality of Vusions video distribution solution, but most of the User Generated Content would not need HD, because it's produced in a way that there's no need to dramatically improve the delivery technology. Quality was impressive, so it could be an big improvement for the distribution professionally produced content - depending on the price per minute.

BestTV's product offers a video management solution for design companies with little experience in video technology to enable them to quickly launch a professional platform for their customers.

I really liked the idea of Magnify.Net. Their plug-in to increase multimedia blogging is not revolutionary, but I think an good step forward to help bloggers to make multimedia publishing way more convenient, so I'm looking forward to activate my WP blog and try it there.

I also liked the presentation of EkkoTV a lot. They presented an aggregation of all major IM, chat, youtube and up to five video-chat in one window. Since my interest is mostly in learning and communication, I'd love to learn more about their approach and have some conversation about how we can use a service like this in corporate intranets to connect employees or bring small learning teams together to prepare presentations or work on tasks cooperatively.

Overall, a lot of great ideas, people and presentations.

Weather influences

Now that we are living in New York Cites Upper West Side, we ake lots of different experiences. For example, today, the weather forecast was really, really bad - and it was right. So we spent most of the day at home, and I was pleased to spent a lot of the day playing with Nathalie.

This was great fun, but sometime this afternoon, I was not sure if Nathalie missed a potty time. I detected lots of liquids on the floor, which turns up as water. Good, from a cleaning point of view, bad becuse I detected that the water just drips out of the wall. It was not that much, so we left here a towel. Later that day, about 11.00 pm, I was looking for Nathalie again, as I wondered about a periodical noise in her room. After inspecting this more deeply, I found out the it started dripping through the ceiling. which I never ever experienced in even much, much cheaper apartments.

So what's next? Call the super and hope he may fix it.

Übercaster

Last night, by chance I visited the ubercaster website. On that site, they offer a very cool podcast software called Übercaster - which obviousely seems to be a german product. I played around with it for half of the night and must consider that this is a really nice piece of software.

The look is very stylish. For my point of view - and for my old eyes - a bit too stylish, because to font is way too small to read. S most of the time I have to guess what I'm doing. Making the fonts 2 points bigger would help a lot. And even if I like the cool black surface, it is "a la longue" not very funny to work in a black box. It would be great to have some skins or customize options.

The programmer knows about podcasters needs, most functions come to you intuitively, beside one: the deleting of sequences. This could be done more easily than by dividiing the soundclip in a couple of pieces and then deleting the one that was not correct. If you made a recording with some noises, coughs etc, I think you would not be very happy to edit like this. would be way better to just mark the piece you want to delete and press the delete-button.
A great feature is the option to directly record skype and iChat conversations. That's cool for interviews, chats, you name it...
One thing to remember - it's made for Mac.
Anyway, for about 80 Euros it's a deal for all of you who are about to enter the podcast world.

I just disovered this functionality, and was exited how it works. It's easy. The qualty of sound could be improved, but it's a really simple way to produce some audio content. I think it's good. What about you?

keeps the Vista away. What a location. Most impressive: It's open 8760 hours / year. This is 365 days / year. 24 hours / day. That's very open. But, after having a look inside, there's nothing more to discover than at Best Buy or all the other stores selling Apple products. Even if they might have whole Manhattan as a store - they have only very few products. Atmoshphere was ok, the salesgirl talking to me had to ask other people for help - not very reliable...

That's interesting. Marion gave me a reply mentioning, that she's running conterclockwise but also said, that, heading to a lake, she turns right. Ooops. I, personally was thinking of the "Coriolis force", because all of us are more or less pure water, so why shouldn't we behave like water in a bathtub? Jan 17: Shuttle nach NY klappt. Hotel (Belleclaire, Upper West Side): Kleine Family-Suite, extra Schlafzimmer. günstig und gut. Nathalie verkraftet die Zeitumstellung (erwartungsgemäß) nicht. Macht es auch für uns sehr schwierig. Heute nix gemacht, außer im Central Park gewesen. Versucht, Kontakt zu Siemens herzustellen. Erfolglos. Besuch des Children Museum of Manhatten (CMOM). War sehr gut für Nathalie, nicht wirklich spannend für die Großen. Könnte trotzdem eine Dauereinrichtung für uns werden.

Packen bis zum letzten Augenblick. Am Abend vorher noch bei Joerg zum Geburtstag, leider wegen allem, was noch erledigt werden musste, (Auto von Sixt ohne Kindersitz, Termin bei Siemens, Packen, )viel zu spaet. Am Dienstag: Kindersitz holen (Stachus) / Kisten einlagern / Unterlagen zu Thomas / Wohnung putzen / Alles packen / Kindersitz einbauen / Fahrt zum Flughafen (machen wir so nie wieder. Nur noch mit Taxi).
Flug wunderbar. In Paris nur 35 Min. zum umsteigen. Deshalb special service: Mit Guide der AirFrance durch Absperrungen und Geheimwege direkt in die Anschlußmaschine.
Geschafft. Wir sind über dem Atlantik.

When I returned from my shopping tour on early Saturday morning (around 10.30 a.m.) the U-Bahn-Station Marienplatz was already closed due to the visit of the pope that AFTERNOON. So, I had to walk to Sendlinger Tor to drive back home. On my way, I saw a child, picking its nose. Then, I was thinking what difference only one letter in a word could cause: A Popel (bogey) is something that plugs your nose, whereas a Pope is something that plugs the subway, the streets and, at least,the brain of some people. Just sitting in the train, heading to the mediaeval marriage of Kira's sister, snoozing, listening to Green Day, enjoying my FIRST DAY OF FREEDOM, thinking about my opportunities, options, perspectives. The women in the row before must have a great journey, because she is accompanied by an exraordinay reading about heroes. "Die wahren Helden des Körper: Das Kiefergelenk" is the haedline, followed by some lines that are so important that I am happy that they are written in big letters. "Schmerzhafte Verspannungen der Kaumuskulatur, Knacken beim Essen und Sprechen, aber auch Rückenschmerzen sind die Folgen, wenn wir sprichwörtlich versuchen, uns durchzubeißen." I mean, well, that's quite interesting. I start to reflect my last years, full of pain, awful headaches, unbelievable hurts of my back, and my Kaumuskulatur was more or less not able to work any more. All this just because I was kind of fighting out my daily business... ? And, what's most remarkable - I never cared for my real hero - my maxillary-joint! Shame on me! Ah, have another look She is just turning the the page (which was p 14 of "Freizeit Revue"), and some more fascinating questions and facts reach my brain:"Darf im Sommer täglich gegrillt werden" - "So bleiben Gardinen strahlend weiß" Oh god! How did I manage my life without ever thinking about the real questions of the world, questions that are so difficult to answer, that I guess even 42 wouldn't give me a clue to the solution. She's turning the page again. And, hey: "Schon wieder Harndrang? Ohne Harndrang lebt sich's leichter!" Come to think about it, I have to agree completely.

Later that day. Driven 400 km in distance, but I passed up to 500 years - in time: The mediaeval marriage of Anette and Oliver. At the very beginning I didn't feel very comfortable with my White-Unicorn-Robe-Brown-Robin-Hood-Cap- Masquerade, (see above | thanks a lot, Svenno), but a couple of hours - what in fact means some sips of met and beer - later, I began to feel comfortable an enjoyed a warm summer night with an whole grilled pork, mountains of fresh bread, lard, smoked trouts, turkish honey and some more gulps of good Pils, served in huge crooks. We left already at half past 11, after the impressing show of some fire spitting jugglers, which was fascinating for all of us, especially Nathalie couldn't stop to spent some "Handgeklapper", But after they had finshed their exciting show, Nathalie was toast. When we reached home, I put off my costume and felt asleep at the same moment. My first night in freedom :-)

Again, I am impressed. Today, my Saeco Aroma Nero gave her last jet stream. I felt a big need for a good cappucino, went into the kitchen and switched the machine on and went back to my work - where I forgot both, the machine and my coffee addiction. About two hours later, I remarked silence, which in this case means that didn't hear the garling and groaring of my black coffee maker. Suddenly, my desire for coffee woke up again, so I hurried into the kitchen, and at the first glance I could remark that she was suddenly overtaken by death. Uhh, this could happen, but not when I am about to prepare coffee. First, I opened the machine, but after a quick visual inpection I had to call for prefessionel help. So I googled for Saeco, they gave me the number of DTS, their Customer Center in Munich. I called in and they put me through to a friendly guy in the repair shop. I told him the problem an he desribed me exactly what to do now. In the middle of the machine, on top of the boiler, I found a spring-loaded-switch which i touched gently. That's it!!!
How much trouble this information avoids me! Packing and sending the machine, waiting for weeks, beeing not longer a human beeing without my morning cappucino - could you envision?!

The kitchen scales miracles

Eight years ago, we purchased a kitchen scales from a local department store. Nothing special, but a good, reliable (as we thought) "Dr. Oetker" branded good, manufactured by Leifheit. It is a digital one, powered by, hm, whatever. There is no solar panel, no plug connector, no battery case. I wondered if this little machine produces the energy from the micrometer-moves of its platform where I can place my bowls - or if they gave me a veritable perpetuum mobile, which I would not expect for that small change. Maybe I should notice that there was a line written on the package: 10 years warranty. A promise like this is inspiring confidence, and so I started using it. I prepared a lot of wonderful meals, breads, cookies, and desserts, passing some tons of flour, Whole Rye Flour, sugar, yeast, in increments not heavier than 2000 grams over the scales -– but then, after a year or so, the digital display gave me instead of the expected 500 a: 0000. I was flutteringly thinking of a way out, the fingers of my left hand automatically forming the usual ctrl-alt-del-triangle, my other hand fingering the back-side of the tiny machine for a reset-button, when a thought crossed my mind. "That's the end of mystery and miracle, let'’s check the reality." I wrote a letter, wrapped the kitchen scales, sent it back to the manufacturer freight collect and started to wait. Now the true miracle happened. It took only a couple of days, than the postmen rang the bell, and -– yes, you'’re right! -– a brand-new kitchen-scales arrived at our home.
That was six years ago. Yesterday, the postman rang again. Think again! - No I bet you really couldn't imagine. It'’s the new Dr. Oetker kitchen scale. Our fifth. With an remarkable, quantum-leap-like engineering improvement: on the bottom I found a battery case.
I a’m looking forward for an infinite cooperation.
And, well, thanks a lot to the Leifheit customer orientated way of handling complaints!!!

Doc visiting weeks

Gosh. My foot and leg still hurt like hell. I'm not able to walk more than 15 steps without a break. Unbelieveable. Today, I was at the doctors again. At first, I visited a new ortopedist, who veryfies the already known diagnosis: rupture of a muscle fibre. But sha had another apprehension: thrombosis. For obtaining clarification, i visited another doctor an 6 pm, who had a really cool machine for viewing inside my venes without injekting any contrast agent. After he greases me with the typical cold gel, he turns out the light, which was a little - well, unexpected - and then he began the color duplex sonography. Absolutely amazing, what kind of quality pictures this machine produces of my body interour. Wow!
But, best wow!, there wasn't the merest hint for a thrombosis - just a hematoma.
So, I'll hurry (whatever that means for me in these days) to my Doc again and see what will happen next.

Wow! For the first time in her life, Nathalie shows a new way of conciousness - self-conciousness. While playing hide-and-seek, when she usually hides herself behind a towel, looking to me very excited and answering my mumbles "Oh! Where is Nathalie? Is she in the bathtub?" with an shy little "Neeiiin" - she yesterday said: "Da bin ich!" Here am I!

Back in Munich

Beeing back in Munich makes it a little bit difficult to post things that I think are worth to talk about. Today, I had a training in speech and breath-techniques, which was really worth attending. Unfortunately, I had a little accident during a "get-together" activity so that I went to hospital the late evening. The doctor diagnosed me with rupture of muscle fibre which means that I have to stay at home for a couple of days, not stressing my right leg. Bad luck, wasn't it?

This means no videos for a couple of days.

1.43 am. Hanging around at Starbucks Lincoln Center. The place is quite busy - just like me. I just posted the catch of the day. I ran around the city beween 2nd and 8th Avenue, and between 18th and 64th Street, zig zagging to all the interesting places. Talking to nice poeple, getting friendly comments to my questions, enjoying lunch and dinner. Just one more night and I'll head back to Munich. Looking forward to see Nathalie and Kira, asking me lot's of questions about the rest. Again and again and again, there's nothing more to consider than: That's the best place for life.

This is a first of a series of 4 videos. I shot them all today. The idea was to do only a couple of 3 second shots so that i have no need to do any cutting work on it. In a way, I think, it works, but it would be better to work on it when I am back at hoem.

Hi,
die Reise war sehr relaxed. Wenig Verkehr, alles geht so bei 65 mph langsam vor sich hin. Noch relaxter ging es vor dem Lincoln-Tunnel zu. Die Querung des Hudson dauerte ungefährt eine Stunde - dafür sind 6 $ natürlich nicht wirklich viel Geld.
Car Rental und Hotel liegen keine 5 Minuten auseinander. Der Weg war kurz, aber kalt. um 19.00 Ortszeit war ich im Hotel und nicht willens, noch einen Schritt zu gehen. Um 8 hab ich mich auf den Weg gemacht zut Barnes & Noble. Geöffnet bis 24 Uhr, da kann man lange rumhängen und stöbern und lesen oder bei Starbuck's CaffeLatte trinken.
